Endorsements are the unsung gatekeepers of your pilot certificate. Miss one and your checkride does not happen. This guide breaks every required sign-off into three clean phases so you and your CFI can track progress without surprises.
Pre-Solo
Aeronautical Knowledge Test
Covers basic rules, weather interpretation, and aircraft performance limits. Your CFI confirms you have completed the required ground study before the pre-solo knowledge test.
Pre-Solo Flight Training
Your instructor verifies you have demonstrated safe takeoffs, landings, and general aircraft control in the specific make and model you will be flying solo.
90-Day Solo Endorsement
Authorizes solo flight. Valid for 90 days. After that your CFI must re-endorse before you go up alone again. Do not let this expire mid-training.
Solo & Cross-Country
Initial Cross-Country Training
Confirms you have been trained in flight planning, navigation, and weather evaluation required for cross-country operations.
Specific Cross-Country Route
Your instructor must approve each individual cross-country flight before you depart. This is per-trip, not a blanket clearance.
Repeated Cross-Country Area
Allows repeated solo flights within a defined geographic area without needing a new endorsement for each flight.
Night Solo
Required before flying solo after dark. Your CFI must verify you have the training and competency for night operations.
Additional Aircraft
Each time you switch to a different make or model for solo flight a separate endorsement is required, even within the same program.
Checkride Endorsements
Knowledge Test Endorsement
Required to sit for the FAA written exam. Your instructor certifies you have completed the required training and are ready to test.
Knowledge Test Deficiency Review
If you missed any questions on the written your instructor must review those areas and endorse your logbook before the checkride.
Practical Test Preparation
Training completed within two months of your checkride. This endorsement has a hard expiration window tied to your test date.
Flight Proficiency Endorsement
Your CFI's final sign-off. Confirms you meet all knowledge, areas of operation, and flight experience requirements for the certificate.
Common Endorsement Mistakes
- Skipping the knowledge test deficiency review after the written. Examiners check for it.
- Letting the 90-day solo endorsement expire mid-training. Set a calendar reminder.
- Flying a cross-country without a specific route sign-off for that flight.
- Missing the 2-month practical test prep window. If you wait too long after your final prep flight the endorsement is no longer valid.
